Phatthalung is one of Thailand 's Southern Provinces.On the Malay Peninsula the province is. To the east it surrounds the broad shallow Songkhla Lake while to the west it is surrounded by Nakhon Si Thammarat chain mountains. Khao Pu – Khao Ya National Park lies at the Trang boundary.

Phatthalung was formerly known in Malay as Mardelong, particularly during the time the area came under the influence of Malay-Muslims.Phatthalung was one of twelve royal towns during the reign of King Ramathibodi I of the Ayutthaya kingdom in the 14th century. King Rama I submitted the city to the Ministry of Defense at the end of the 18th century, which was responsible for all the provinces in the South. During King Chulalongkorn's administrative reform, Phatthalung became a part of the Nakhon Si Thammarat Monthon.

There is one Phatthalung Provincial Administration Organization and 49 municipal areas within the province as of 26 November 2019. Phatthalung has the status of a city. Further 48 municipalities in the subdistrict. 24 Subdistrict Administrative Organisations-SAO (ongkan borihan suan tambon) administer the non-municipal areas.

There is no airport in Phatthalung. Trang Airport, which is 66 km from downtown Phatthalung, is the nearest airport.The main station, the Phatthalung Railway Station, is at Nakhon Si Thammarat.
