Elephants in Kerala are often referred to as the "sons of the sahya"( poem Sahyante Makan by Vyloppalli Sreedhara Menon). As the State Animal, the elephant is depicted on the Kerala State Government logo, taken from both Travancore and Cochin's Royal Arms. It is claimed that many wild elephants will never tolerate an elephant that has been captured in the wild and domesticated.

Thechikkottukavu Ramachandran (born c. 1964) is a captive elephant owned by Thechikottukavu devasom, a temple in Kerala. Ramachandran is the tallest captive elephant in India, and the second tallest in Asia, behind Nadungamuwe Raja, a tusker in Sri Lanka. Ramachandran is well known as Raman amongst elephant lovers and enjoys following a big fan through Kerala.
Ramchandran does the Poora Vilambaram which marks the beginning of Thrissur Pooram. Poora Vilambaram is a tradition where the elephant pushes open the south entrance gate of the Vadakkunnathan Temple, which hosts the Thrissur Pooram, with the idol of 'Neithilakkavilamma' atop it.

On 21 October 2015, Pambadi Rajan was honored by MAHANAVAMI COMMITTEE, Kodunthirapully Village, Palakkad with the new title SAARVABHAUMAN GAJARAJA GANDHARVAN. He was the winner of the Ithithanam Elephant Fest which takes place in Ithithanam near Changanassery in Kottayam district in 2006 and 2007.
