To astronomy lovers, the year 2020 has been quite an exciting time so far. We have seen two penumbral lunar eclipses already this year and one annular solar eclipse. Now the fourth eclipse is all set to soon arrive on the 5th of July night-a penumbral lunar one.

This will be visible from some areas of North America during moonrise, South and North America, the extreme portion of Namaqua Land in South Africa and West Africa (completely visible), and New Zealand in southwestern Europe, some areas of the Pacific Ocean, Central, East Africa (except for Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea and the North East Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia) and other parts of North Africa and Ethiopia.

In a penumbral lunar eclipse-only the Earth's outer diffused shadow named penumbra-falls on the moon's surface. It is easier to find a penumbral eclipse than a complete eclipse or a partial Moon eclipse.

A total or partial lunar eclipse in which the moon gets a dark shadow or a part of it is engulfed in shadow-the penumbral lunar eclipse does not advance to a similar climax. At best, the moon will only be showing a dark area that somebody who is very observant can spot. An EarthSky article cited eclipse specialist Fred Espenak saying that 35 per cent of lunar eclipses are penumbral.

The eclipse will occur in India during daytime, this time, viewers will not be treated with an eclipse. It is expected the total eclipse will last for 2 hours 43 mins 24 secs.

what is Lunar Eclipse ?

A lunar eclipse occurs while the Moon is passing into the shadow of the Earth. It can only happen when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly or very similarly with the other two. Only in the night of a full moon can a lunar eclipse happen. The type and length of a lunar eclipse depends on the proximity of the Moon to any node in their orbit.

Planet absolutely prevents the direct sunlight from entering the Moon during a total lunar eclipse. Earth's atmosphere has refracted the primary light emitted from the lunar surface. For the same reason that a sunset or sunrise does, this light appears reddish: the Rayleigh dispersion of bluer light. A totally eclipsed Moon is sometimes called a blood moon because of this reddish colour.

Solar eclipse that can only be seen from a relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere on the Earth's night-side. Due to the smaller size of the Moon 's shadow, a total lunar eclipse can last up to nearly 2 hours, while a total solar eclipse only lasts up to a few minutes at any given place. By comparison to solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are often safe to see without any eye protection or special measures, because they are dimmer than the full moon.
